Summer is just around the corner and the upcoming weekend is probably the last one to go for a bush walk this year before it gets too hot and humid.
One particularly beautiful walk that is perfect for this time of year is the coast walk from Kiama to Gerringong. Kiama is about a two hour drive south from the city centre and the climate already a tiny little bit cooler than in Sydney. The starting point is on Elanora Rd, Kiama Heights and the end point at Werri Beach in Gerringong.
What makes this walk so special is that it is not in a National Park. That means
- You can finally bring your dog with you! Yai!
2. The coast walk goes along farm land across cow meadows and soft and green hills. My husband even felt reminded of hikes through the Swiss Alps. I think the big cliffs and the ocean is too hard to ignore, but it is probably as close as a bush walk in Australia can get to a hike in the Alps.
Saying that, the combination of green hills and steep ocean cliffs is the beauty of this walk.
Compared to a hike up an alpine mountain, this is a walk in the park. The hills aren’t steep and there is always enough breath left to have a chat, which makes time fly by. If you don’t stop every hundred metres to take photos like I do, the whole coast walk is easily doable in two hours.
Werri Beach in Gerringong at the end of the walk is the perfect place to take a picnic break and even have a swim in the ocean – something you definitely can’t do in the Swiss Alps.
