Besides going to the beach, bush walks are pretty much the only possible way to enjoy nature in and outside Sydney. It’s too cold for swimming right now, so that leaves us with bush walking. The great thing about Sydney winter is that when it’s sunny, the air is crisp and crystal clear, whereas in summertime it’s most often humid and hazy and simply too hot. That’s why bush walking is especially enjoyable during wintertime.
The “Spit to Manly walk” is just fantastic. You can start in the middle of Sydney and you don’t need a car: Simply catch a bus to the Spit Bridge, walk across, to the right, always along the coast – until you are in Manly. It is so easy. You don’t even need GPS. Furthermore, it’s safe and never far from civilization, you don’t need special outdoor gear and it is not a hard walk – at all. However, it takes around 3 hours (with a few five minute breaks, slow walking and lots of taking photos of course). Even though you are very close to civilization at all times, you walk through the national park along the coast and feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. At other times you walk along the beach or up on top cliffs and then again alongside impressive ocean-view villas and mansions. Behind every curve there is something new to see. It’s very scenic at all times. It doesn’t matter if you’re just a tourist in Sydney, or if you live here with your family and kids, or even if you just want to do something active with a bunch of friends on the weekend: The Spit to Manly walk is a great opportunity to get outside the house and do something enjoyable outdoors. The best part about the walk are the pubs and restaurants at the end of the walk in Manly. The beverages at either the Bavarian beer café directly at the wharf or at the 4 pines with its own home brewed beer and cider will take care of you. If you are lucky and get up early enough you will be able to catch the ferry back to the city as the sun sets over the harbour bridge and you can call it a perfect day.
